What is a Certificate of Translation?

A certificate of translation is a document signed by the translator that indicates the translation is complete and accurate, and has not been done by a family member, friend, or associate. Individuals may be asked for a certificate of translation for many reasons. Common examples include applying for a driver’s license/visa, during legal proceedings, or for diplomas/transcripts used by a foreigner when applying to an educational institution.

What does a Certificate of Translation include?

According to the American Translators Association, a certificate of translation must include the following at a minimum:

  • A statement of the translator’s qualifications.

  • A statement affirming the completeness and accuracy of the document.

  • Identification of the translated document and language.

  • The translator’s name, signature, and the date.

Some parties will require that individuals have certificates of translation notarized. In these cases, you should not sign the certificate until in the presence of a notary, since they must witness your signature.
